Computer maintenance is one of the easiest, yet most often overlooked, things to do to speed up your computer and make it run like new. There are physical aspects, as well as computer-software-specific aspects, that determine if you own a well-maintained machine or a dilapidated hunk of metal destined for the scrap heap.
One of the best things you can do is to keep dust inside and outside the case to a minimum. Computers are dust magnets. They suck in fresh air in an attempt to keep the CPU and other components cool, but often inhale dust that clogs up the intake and exhaust, rendering any cooling virtually impossible.
So the first order of business is to clean that dust out!
The second order of business is to run several utilities that help bring your computer back into shape:
Defragment Your Hard Drive
Scan Disk
Back Up Files
You can schedule these tasks to run, too, using the built-in scheduling modules of your Operating System. We suggest scheduling each one of these tasks to run once a week, in the wee hours of the night when you aren’t trying to use your computer.
