When your computer throws hard drive errors at you, run a scan disk. Doing so will not only alert you to existing problems, but it also warns you of bigger problems down the road. One of the options is to fix the errors. In most cases, go ahead and fix any errors that this utility finds.
Simple tip: Schedule to run once a week, in the middle of the night when you’re not using it, setting it to fix any errors it finds.
For a better hard drive utility, check out SpinRite.
Eventually, left unchecked, a hard drive will fail. SpinRite actually keeps your disk in top physical condition.
It can even recover data that is lost when a hard drive begins to fail.
